This advertisement will be used to fill one of the following  Assistant City Attorney positions:

  • Assistant City Attorney I: Starting salary $57,950.88 annually
  • Assistant City Attorney II: Starting salary $63,746.28 annually
  • Assistant City Attorney III: Starting salary $84,845.28 annually
 

This position is an "unclassified" position and has no disciplinary appeal rights to the Municipal Civil Service Commission.  This position is likewise subject to at-will employment status and can be terminated at any time for any reason.

Essential Job Functions
  • Advocates on behalf of the City in a wide variety of settings, including negotiations, dispute resolutions, mediations, trials, hearings, and administrative processes to resolve disputes or legal actions.
  • Represents the City in all aspects of trial work, including pre-trial discovery, motions, trial preparation, mediations, and trials.
  • Researches, analyzes, and interprets Municipal Civil Service Rules, Administrative Directives,and all other city policies and procedures governing city employment.
  • Drafts legal documents for administrative and court proceedings, settlements, City ordinances, and other legal instruments.
  • Consults, briefs, and makes presentations to City Departments, City Management, and City Council.
  • Advises City staff and elected and appointed City Officials in various areas of municipal law.
  • Timely and appropriately responds to inquiries from the general public and media about public information and municipal regulations and procedures.
  • Performs other related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required. 
Job Requirements

Job Requirements for Assistant City Attorney I:

  • L.L.B. or J.D. Degree from an accredited school of law.
  • Licensed and in good standing to practice law in the State of Texas.
  • This position requires a valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License OR valid driver's license from another state with the ability to obtain a valid Texas Driver's License within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident.  Proof of liability insurance will be required.

 Job Requirements for Assistant City Attorney II:
  • L.L.B. or J.D. Degree from an accredited school of law.
  • Five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience as a practicing Attorney.
  • Years of full time municipal law experience may be substituted two (2) for one (1), up to a maximum of four years credit.
  • Licensed and in good standing to practice law in the State of Texas.
  • No substitution for education allowed.
  • This position requires a valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License OR valid driver's license from another state with the ability to obtain a valid Texas Driver's License within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident.  Proof of Liability Insurance will be required.

Job Requirements for Assistant City Attorney III:
  • L.L.B. or J.D. Degree from an accredited school of law.
  • Ten (10) years of increasingly responsible experience as a practicing Attorney.
  • Years of full time municipal law experience may be substituted two (2) for one (1), up to a maximum of four years credit.
  • Licensed and in good standing to practice law in the State of Texas.
  • This position requires a valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License OR valid driver's license from another state with the ability to obtain a valid Texas Driver's License within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident.  Proof of liability insurance will be required.

ADDITIONAL JOB REQUIREMENT:
  • Applicants for this position must pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility.  Due to CJIS requirements related to system access, the following will result in being disqualified for this position:  Felony Convictions, Felony Deferred Adjudication, Class A & B Misdemeanor Deferred Adjudication, Class B Misdemeanor Convictions, an Open Arrest for Any Criminal Offense (Felony or Misdemeanor), and Family Violence Convictions.
 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of Texas Civil Law.
  • Experience in all aspects of civil trial work. 
  • Experience in negotiation techniques and strategies.

  • Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months.  One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.
  • Applicants selected for employment with the City of San Antonio in this position must receive satisfactory results from pre-employment drug testing and background checks.  If required for the position, a physical, motor vehicle record evaluation, and additional background checks may be conducted.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Physical requirements include occasional lifting/carrying of 5 pounds; visual acuity, speech, and hearing; hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate a computer keyboard and basic office equipment.  Subject to sitting, standing, reaching, walking, twisting, and kneeling to perform the essential functions.  Working conditions are primarily inside an office or courtroom environment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of Civil and Criminal Law.
  • Knowledge of Civil Rules and procedures of County, District, and Federal Court Systems.
  • Skill in researching and analyzing legal problems.
  • Ability to strategize and maintain effective relationships with other attorneys and City staff.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to supervise and train.
